Key Takeaways

  • IFA 2023 showcased several new releases of EV charging solutions from non-automotive tech companies, indicating the growing presence of EVs in the mainstream.
  • Baseus introduced its first-ever EV charger, the Nebula Series Green GaN, which boasts features such as low idle consumption, water-resistance, and remote connectivity.
  • MSI, known for computer components, unveiled the MSI Smart EV Charger with a maximum charging power of 14.4 kW, compatible with Type 1 and Type 2 plugs, and featuring a 7-inch screen and AI-powered license plate reader.

Even though the IFA trade fair in Berlin is mostly focused on consumer electronics, this year the venue also had plenty of electric vehicle charging and power solutions. This shows EVs are slowly creeping into the mainstream, when a non-automotive tech venue was the stage for several new releases aimed specifically at electric cars.

Here is our pick of the most important EV-related reveals from IFA 2023.

Baseus EV Charger

Baseus is known as a leading maker of chargers and power banks for handheld devices, but the company actually sells a lot more than that, including a portable vacuum cleaner designed to clean your car. The company chose IFA 2023 to unveil another product designed to be used with cars, its first-ever EV charger.

Called the Nebula Series Green GaN EV Charger, it promises to be a super efficient unit with low idle consumption, good heat dissipation, and even an IP55 water-resistance rating. It also has remote connectivity capability and even 5G, as well as a maximum charging speed of 3.3 kW, making it a Level 2 charger that you can install in your garage.

MSI EV Charger

You probably know MSI for its computer components, such as motherboards or video cards, but the company is now trying to expand into EV chargers. Initially shown at CES 2023 in January, the MSI Smart EV Charger made its European debut at IFA 2023.

Just like the charger from Baseus, you could have the MSI charger installed in your garage so that you could charge your EV at home. It is quite a bit quicker, though, with a maximum charging power rating of 14.4 kW at 60 amps, which is enough to add as much as 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range in one hour.

It is also dust- and water-resistant with its IP55 rating, and it is compatible with both Type 1 (J1772) and Type 2 plugs. Charging information is displayed on a 7-inch screen that also lets you adjust various settings. It apparently even has an AI-powered license plate reader that’s integrated into the accompanying mobile app.

EV-Compatible Anker Portable Power Station

Another company known for its power banks, Anker, has also used its IFA 2023 stand to showcase an EV charging solution. However, unlike MSI and Baseus, it’s not a charger for your garage, but rather a pair of portable batteries that have been designed to work with EVs.

It’s called the Anker Solix F3800, and the company brands it as “the most accessible home power system,” referring to its affordability (it will cost $999) and ease of installation. It has a 3.84 kWh battery that can be charged either via the grid or from solar panels, and it can then be used to charge EVs.

Since it is a portable unit, you could, for instance, use it in case your EV runs out of battery close to home and you don’t want to call a tow truck.

Mobile Power Solution Providers Are Moving to EVs

As more EVs are built, there will be an increasing need for solutions to keep them juiced up. It’s only natural that companies already specialized in providing power solutions will want to also begin offering EV charging solutions, as that will end up being a huge market.

It looks like when the time comes to make your home EV-ready, you will be spoiled for choice, and the products you pick may not be from one of today's established EV charging players.
